The whole thing has often left existing DSLR owners a little lost – ‘why isn’t there a direct replacement for my camera?’ – but has undoubtedly meant there are many more attractive, accessible cameras on the market just waiting to entice first-time DSLR owners.

And its into this maelstrom of DSLR proliferation that Nikon launches its latest baby DSLR, the Nikon D5000. The name will come as no surprise to anyone within earshot of the rumor mill but the camera itself may present some more surprises. Having confused many people but made huge ground with its simplified D40 and D60 range, it appears Nikon has again decided that simply replacing models isn’t the best way to address the market. So here we have a camera that genuinely seems to sit above the D60 (rather than continuing in parallel until the stock runs out), and below the D90. Like the baby Nikons, the D5000 doesn’t have an autofocus motor built into the body but does gain a tilt-and-swivel LCD, as a series of leaked images that have made their way around the internet would have you expect.

The idea of an upper-entry-level DSLR (for want of a better term), that sits below the ‘enthusiast’ grade D90 (with its twin control dials, big battery and pentaprism viewfinder), is hardly a radical one â?? the Canon 500D camera and Olympus E-620 seem to cater to a similar market. So what does this new Nikon have to offer either the tech-savvy first-time DSLR buyer, or the owner of an older entry-level model wanting newer features but unwilling to slavishly follow the manufacturer’s upgrade path.

Can anyone help me with what type of Universal Converters I will need to purchase so I can recharge my battery while I am out of country? I've seen some sold at Target, but haven't purchased any yet. I want to know if there is any specific kind that will be compatible with my camera. Will any just do?

I'm going to China myself in August, so I've done a bit of research on this.

China's electrical system uses 3-pronged plugs, very different from what we have in the US. They also use a 220 volt system. Here's a link that shows what they look like.
http://www.kropla.com/china_power.htm

A kit is a wise choice as you may find differences going from rural to urban areas.
We're going to be traveling from North to South, so we'll be sure to bring several different adaptors.

Here's some further info for you.
http://www.buytravelconverter.com/china.aspx

By the way, be sure to bring extra memory cards. I plan to bring four or five 2g memory cards for my D70.

Hope you have a great adventure, and take plenty of pictures!

Check the label on your charging unit, under the heading of "input"

It should list a voltage input in AC, typically 110-240 VAC (that's volts AC). If it says that, then your charger can handle UK voltage and you just need an plug adapter on the end. If it says something different (like 110-120 VAC), then you'll need a transformer to move the 220v UK voltage to 120 volts US voltage.

I recently purchased a Nikon D40. I, of course, love it, but have a question I can't seem to find a focused answer on.

I don't have the money to purchase the back up battery until I get paid next month, and was wondering about the charge process for the battery that came with the camera.

Is it best to let the charge die before recharging, or can you charge it at any interval to assure you're juiced up for a full day of shooting?

Is it a good idea to charge it frequently, or not?

I'm coming from a point-n-shoot Canon where it was kind of hit or miss, and the batteries for the D40 aren't nearly as affordable as the typical rechargeable AA batteries, so I wanna get this right.

Thank you in advance for your help.

Your camera has Li-Ion battery. While not cheap it's a nice battery that has these key properties:

- Low weight
- No memory effect
- Very slow self-discharge rate.
- Amazing battery life

What this means to you?
Since it has no memory, it can be charged at your pleasure. You don't have to wait for it to drain. It is advisable to fully drain it every now and then, but again, not necessarily every single time. You don't want to be caught with nearly empty battery when the great photo opportunity arises.

Low self discharge means if you're not shooting anything for a while – you will probably not have to worry about the battery losing the charge. Just charge it fully and keep it in a camera on stand-by!

If you come from a camera with AAA rechargeables – you'll probably be amazed how much better the battery life of your D40 is. It is probably going to be good for at least 400 shots on one charge with battery fully rechargable in about 90 minutes. So unless you are doing A LOT of shooting in the same day and have no spare time to recharge, you may even do well with just one battery.

I was going to buy an extra battery for my D80, when I was researching it, but when I saw how amazing the battery life it has, I just quit and bought a few filters instead! Note, that D80 has a better battery life than D40, but I think D40 is still a great battery preserver, so try and shoot with it for a while, and then decide if you want to invest your $$$ into this!

It also matters a great deal how you shoot. For example, I never use onboard flash (have external unit), so I usually recharge my D80 battery after about 300-400 shots, and it has never been under 50% as per camera indicator! Your mileage may vary depending on how you shoot, plus again – D80 has better battery life than D40….

By the way, if you do decide to buy – only buy from reputable dealers and only genuine Nikon battery. Stay away from the "compatible" ones. This is a very high power battery, and the original includes some safeguards against short-circuiting that may result in a fire or explosion that the $14.99 knockoffs don't. Don't gamble with your camera and your health for that matter!

LEM.

You would be happier with at least a 1 GB memory card, preferably a relatively fast card, like the Sandisk Ultra II (60X) or Lexar Platinum (80X). There is no noticeable difference between 60X and 80X. Anything faster than these is great, but not essential by any means. If you think you will do a lot of shooting in the contiuous mode (sports, etc), consider buying a 2 GB card. They really don't cost much more anyway.
