So the D40 will accept a "secure digital high capacity" (SDHC) card.

Any card which meets SD or SDHC specs should work in the D40. The fastest cards are likely to be the SanDisk Extreme IV cards or Sandisk Ducati cards.

There is no D80x

The difference between Canon’s and Nikon’s?
Both are used by the pros.
All the lenses made for Nikon’s from 1959 forward can be used on all current Nikon cameras.
Only lenses made for Canon EOS cameras (AF and digital cameras lenses since 1985) can be used on current Canon Cameras.
Other differences exist, but there is a long list. Some features make it eaiser for photographers to use the cameras from each company.

I use the Image Comment to embed my copyright notice in each image I shoot. I use the Image Authentication for shots that are used editorially and if they have the possiblity of being used in a legal way and use those D200’s features.

@Sophie: I think the Nikon D40 makes a good beginner camera, and megapixels really don’t matter unless you’re going to be making huge prints. Otherwise, it’s a good camera and doesn’t cost as much as other entry-level DSLRs.

I recommend that you check out these 2 cameras:

Pentax K-x 12MP DSLR with 18-55mm Zoom lens – $549

Below, I listed some links, the first link listed below is to a web page that lists the 2 DSLR cameras I am recommending. This list will let you compare features and specs, also it has links to reviews of the cameras, the reviews include sample images from the cameras. Also I included some links to some dealers so that you can try and get the best price. Some dealers have some nice extras, free shipping is very common, and sometimes they are offering a free memory card and/or camera bag. Sometimes you have to click in the “add to cart” button to see the actual price. Both of these cameras also have a 2 lens kit deal.

Both cameras can do HD video which may be a nice bonus with your interest in basketball. Both cameras are excellent quality at higher ISO settings which can be useful in low light places and helping get the picture. The Pentax is especially strong in the higher ISO range and that can be of very strong interest if shooting in low light situations and needing some decent speed shutter speeds to freeze action like basketball in a gym.

I think people have given you some good options. I believe Adorama sells third party warranties for their cameras as well.
