I'm going to China myself in August, so I've done a bit of research on this.

China's electrical system uses 3-pronged plugs, very different from what we have in the US. They also use a 220 volt system. Here's a link that shows what they look like.
http://www.kropla.com/china_power.htm

A kit is a wise choice as you may find differences going from rural to urban areas.
We're going to be traveling from North to South, so we'll be sure to bring several different adaptors.

Here's some further info for you.

By the way, be sure to bring extra memory cards. I plan to bring four or five 2g memory cards for my D70.

Hope you have a great adventure, and take plenty of pictures!
References :
Amateur & professional photographer for 40+ years.

Your charger should work from 110 V to 220 V.
In China they use 220 V.

Having said that, you need electrical outlet adaptor. They have different types:

As you said check Target or Radio Shack for Universal outlet adapter which has various prongs. Samsonite has a set and JC Penny sells them online too.

I bought one from Radio Shack when I went to Africa and it worked well.
You could get it from Airport but I would buy one and pack it.

Good Luck.
References :
yes, just make sure the type is the one for Shenzhen (or China). Even though you don't need the other converters for the other countries, it's usually cheaper to buy the whole set (they come for most countries in the world in a set). Also you should make sure that the wattage on your charger matches that in China. I'm honestly not sure what it is, so you prob wanna ask someone at a travel/ electronic area. Don't quote me on this one, but I think it might be 200 to 250, I honestly don't know though.
