Other than the camera, 18-55 mm lens, a UV filter and a handful of memory cards, you may want to eventually buy the remote shutter release ($17) and a sturdy tripod.

For now, Photoshop Elements (under $100) will do all you need until you decide to go pro … by then you will be buying a Nikon D3, or latest version and Photoshop CS4 extended, adding about $6,000 to your camera system, not counting all the lenses you will need when you go pro.

I like the Picasa2 editing software. As for accessories, start off with the 18-135mm lens for most jobs and add some marco lenses for extreme close-ups.
