The software that comes with it should have programs for Macintosh.

The software that comes with it is irrelevant. You can use the camera with a Mac or Windows based computer without installing any software. On your mac a program like iPhoto will help you in managing your pictures.

The only thing you might need extra software for would be viewing or converting RAW files from the camera (if you chose to shoot in RAW, which I would recommend against if you don’t know what I’m talking about.) Even if you did choose to shoot in RAW, the Nikon Capture NX software that can convert this format comes with the camera and works on a mac.

For the past three years, I have been running Windows XP on my iBook because Photoshop CS2 runs faster on XP … I don’t know why.

Nikon software will run on both Mac and PC’s, you can use iPhoto to sort and manipulate your images from the D40. Is there a reason you think it will not work on your Mac?

Cameras on not OS dependent … only programs.
