Buy a Sony A200 instead, not only is it a more feature rich camera, it takes cheap excellent 20 year old Minolta AF lenses that you can buy off eBay (I have bought old Minolta, Sigma and Tamron lenses, they all work perfectly). The Sony has an AF motor in the body and it also has image stabilisation in the body, so the old lenses not only meter and auto-focus properly, they also use image stabilisation too! I see no reason to purchase a D40 over the A200, it makes no sense to do so. Buy a Sony A200 instead, not only is it a more feature rich camera, it takes cheap excellent 20 year old Minolta AF lenses that you can buy off eBay (I have bought old Minolta, Sigma and Tamron lenses, they all work perfectly).

The Sony has an AF motor in the body and it also has image stabilisation in the body, so the old lenses not only meter and auto-focus properly, they also use image stabilisation too!

I see no reason to purchase a D40 over the A200, it makes no sense to do so. Get past the Nikon badge and buy the Sony instead.

It uses lenses with silent wave motors in the lenses They will be designated AF-s or AF i That is not to say you cannot use the other lenses you can use anything from AI converted lenses on but with AI, AF and AF-d you will have to focus manually. This is not a big deal I still choose to focus manually on many shoots to get the focus exactly where I want to. I do this even on my D300 which does have an autofocus motor in the body You can do this visually on the D40 or you can focus manually using the electronic range finder. Basically when the little green light in the lower left of the eyepiece lights up you are in focus. Autofocus depends on the lens, although, most newer lenses today have autofocus anyways so no need to worry. Only the much older lenses don't have auto focus. If you're buying a kit, rest assured that the D40 kit will come in with a lens that has autofocus.
