Nikon D40 Digital SLR Camera?

Anyone know if this is a decent camera? And with 6.1 Megapixel is there a camera out there at around the same price with more? do the megapixels matter that much?

And also for the same price are there any better cameras? I have found this camera for £260.

The Nikon D40 Is A Really Nice Camera

despite it’s six megapixel resolution, you can still get loads of detail. You have to remember: the sensor on a digital SLR is physically much larger, and can cover more, and get more details in the shot. this isn’t a point and shoot camera, so it’s not like a six megapixel point and shoot camera, the quality on the d40 will be much better in practice.

that’s what i can get from this camera, the quality is very nice, i also have a six megapixel point and shoot camera, and the quality is so different, they really can’t be compared. The d40 is 470$ Us dollars for a reason, because it’s a digital SLR, and when used right, the images will be just fantastic. Trust me, you don’t need to worry about the D40’s Six megapixels.

when it comes to better cameras, there’s none for the price. there’s the XT which is a nice camera, but it’s not better for any reason. The D40 is much better.

Why not go for the D40x its a much better camera and you get more for your money. Forgot going to Jessops though…you will pay through the nose. Ebay and Amazon have some great new D40x deals. Also for around £260 you could find a very good second hand D40, D40x (or D60 which has 10mp). Ive had both of these in my time and they are both fantastic camera’s….but hey, Iam a Nikonite though and through.

When your dealing with DSLR’s the megapixels don’t effect the quality terribly. It isn’t like a compact where the picture is totaly made up if you get me.

I can guarantee your satisfaction with the D40 (that is ofcourse if you have experience with SLR’s and now how to use them) Nikon are one of the best makes out there, and there are other camera’s similar that say they are 10 mp but the Nikon overall is better despite the lower amount of megapixels!

At the entry level a lot of required features are not available with Nikon, for instance you can’t automatically bracket shots (used for HDR and other situations) you have to do it manually.

The megapixels only determine the size of print you can get ‘natively’ (i.e. without adding or removing pixels).

With 6Mp its a tad over A4, with 10Mp its A3+ size. The larger pixel count with 10Mp also means you can crop half the picture away and still have enough pixels for an A4 image.

Look into the Pentax range they are always fully featured. Anti shake built into the camera so EVERY lens is anti shake, full auto bracketing for exposure, white balance, even depth, all built right in.

Definitely NOT a good buy.

Nikon have left so much out of this camera, its unreal, thats why they are cheap.

6mp is adequate for a dslr. Mine is 6, and have seen one of my pics blown up to 50×70cm, even after it has been cropped, and still looked great.

The D4 o is an excellent camera and the kit lens,18-55, is very sharp. Battery life is excellent, you can expect 300 or more pictures on a single charge. The D40’s control layout is easy to understand and its light weight makes it very easy to carry around.

Yeah, its OK for a starter camera, but not much else. This camera USED to be good, but now it’s ancient in terms of technology The price is low because it’s so very outdated, and limited in it’s capabilities. In my opinion, for the same price, you could easily find a number of high quality P&S cameras that will do every bit, and more than the D40 will. But, that’s just MY opinion. The choice is yours.

The D40 is a decent camera and is aimed squarely at the compact camera user who wants to move up to interchangeable lenses but doesn’t want the hassle of too many other options. I’ve sold dozens of the camera.

The D40x has been discontinued for a while, it came back to life as the D60. Mostly it’s the X with a new badge but there are some subtle under the hood changes plus 10 MP too. Mostly it’s the VR lens that comes with the D60 that makes it an outstanding buy.

The D40 isn’t a particularly fast camera and those looking to shoot kids sports or anything of equal speed would be advised to compare before buying.

Further if you are going with Nikon because you already own Nikon lenses please, please be aware that most lenses over 2 years old won’t work on any D40 / D60 unless they are marked "AF/S". These bodies don’t have focus motors built in and over 75% of the Nikon, Tamron or Sigma lenses won’t work on them.

Have you ever used a DSLR before? If the answer is no, the D40 is definitively the best camera for you.
It allows you to take highly professional shots, but it makes taking them easy OR hard, because of the in-camera settings. Let me explain…

the main menu, for example, can be set up to tell you exactly what and how to use aperture/ shutter speeds/ exp comp/ etc, but it can also be changed to look like a much higher-end DSLR (EG: same menu’s as the D200) so you can develop your camera skills.

However, if you’re looking for something a little more professional, aimed at the intermediate photographer, get the D60. But, it would be a lot harder to use if you’re brand new to the world of SLR’s.
