To learn how to use your camera you have to read the manual. I can also suggest you a website (dPreview) but nothing can replace a manual book.

You can also download it on the web.

If you are proficient in photography, then an excellent setup guide for your D40 can be found at
http://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/d40/users-guide/index.htm

Ken’s user’s guide has practical information that is right for Ken. His style may not suit yours, so feel free to ignore anything you don’t agree with.

The manual for the D40 is online at the Nikon web site. Download that and skim through it. It will be hard to follow without the camera in your hands, but it will allow you to see what the camera offers.

To unleash the potential of the D40, or any camera, you need to learn about basic photography. Best bet is to take an adult ed course at your local community college or go to the library and borrow some books. Or, find a camera geek and see if they can teach you some basics.
