Nikon D40 SLR camera?

is this a good Slr camera.what sort of things do i have to go for in SLR cameras i am just starting out

OK, first off, lets dispel some mis-information.

All Nikon f-mount lenses will fit the D40 and D40x. The newer lenses(AF-D,AF-G) lenses will meter, but not autofocus. Only the AF-S and Sigma HSM motor lenses will autofocus with the D40. Anything older than the AF-D/G lenses will mount but not meter or autofocus.

ANY SLR/DSRL is better than any point and shoot camera. I gross generalization, but 99% of the time true. The Nikon D40 is a great camera, as are all the Nikon and Canon entry level cameras.

People at camera stores generally get paid on commission. Since the D40 is at the lowest end of what Nikon sells as far as price goes, they will try and upsell you. Look at the reviews online of the D40 and D40x and you will see a completely different story than what the other poster stated they got at Wolf.

Just do a web search on "Nikon D40 reviews" and look at all the sites that have reviewed this body designation and kit lens. I think you’ll see what I mean.

Its awesome. to be fair be fair if your spending that much on a digital camera you’ll get a good one. Have a look at the sony aswell.

Before rushing out to buy a new camera, IMO you should first take a photography class. Check with your local high school or community college.

Learning about light, ISO, f-stops, shutter speeds and composition will help you decide exactly what you need and want in a camera. After all, would you buy a car before learning to drive?

hi yes they are a really good camera but you need to check about the lenses available for the d40 as there is an issue as not all NIKON FIT lenses are compatable with this or the 40x. so a lot of the lower priced sigma ones wont work. if in doubt go to your local jessops store they should be able to help you decide.

if in doubt get something like the canon 400d for a little bit more you get the sensor cleaning system as standard whereas on the nikon you dont and both cameras are about the same weight and size and pixel rate.

Join Flickr (It’s free, no hassle and great fun!). There will you find millions of groups dedicated to Nikon and the D40. Ask them.

I’ve tried the camera. The results seem great, but I’m not sure about high ISO. It can feel a little plasticy, and the pop-up flash is automatic and annoying. But otherwise it’s a pretty good consumer camera.

This one is NOT the best that Nikon has made….

This may not matter to you, but all Nikon SLR camera lenses are interchangeable except the lenses for the D40. I have a D50, which they don’t make anymore. I’d buy the D70 (I think that’s the next one up-whichever it is).

The salesperson at Wolf Camera told me the D40 is just not that great. I think it’s kind of more an amateur SLR. I know this salesperson is honest because he tried to talk my friend into buying the D50 when she wanted a Canon Rebel something, which costs more than the D50. What salesperson would do that unless they really believed in the D50? But the D70 or 80 is even better!!

Oh one more thing, with digital cameras-white balance is your best friend!!!! USE IT!!!
