Nikon D40 Reviews | Suggestions | Comparisons | Performance
I’m thinking of buying one of these two camera’s but i don’t know the difference between them. What has one got over the other?, etc. And wheather buying the lower model will affect my photographs/works. I mainly take photos of landscapes and bits and pieces of others as well!!

Short and simple,
the D40 is older, the D60 is never. The main difference is the D60 has a dust removal system. the D40 has around 6mp and the D60 has around 10mp.
I would just go with the D40 and buy a nicer lens, you’ll need one.
The nikkor 18-70mm and 18-200mm are both great starter lenses and they both have VR!
I just recently bought a Nikon D80 w/ 18-135mm lens.. it doesn’t have VR, right about now I wish I bought a outfit that included a VR lens..
It helps with shaky hands.

The D60 is actually the replacement of the D40X. It does have more megapixels and a slightly faster ability to shoot more fps in jpeg of course. The D60 also has a self cleaning image sensor which the D40 does lack.
What it really comes down to is the money and the lens! Personally, I would buy the D40 (6 megapixels are plenty and most people couldn’t tell the difference between 3fps and 2.5) and then outfit it with a really nice lens. It comes with the 18-55mm lens if you buy the kit so I would get a 70-300mm lens with the VR! VR or Vibration Reduction can really make or break a picture and the D40 doesn’t have built in Image Stabilization. (I recall the D60 having but am not 100% sure)
So in the end it comes down to the lenses and the money of course. Hope this helped.

The D40 is a 6Mp vs the D60’s 10.2Mp.
The D40 was Nikon’s replacement for the D50 whereas the Newest version, the D60 is comparable to the D300 in it’s capabilities.
The D40 will cost about $500, the D60 about $700… average difference runs about $160.
Flash sync… the D60 loses in this category with less than half that of the D40 (500 vs 200). If you want to really stop action (I mean shooting hummingbirds in flight), you might want to consider the D40 for that and with the money you save… invest in an SB600 or SB800 external flash system.
I’ve placed a side by side review by James Fryer who, though a Canon user with biases, does give a reasonable account for himself in comparing these two side by side.

In short, the D60 is 10.2MP and can shoot at 3 fps (frames per second), while the D40 is 6.1MP and can shoot at 2.5 fps. Probably more important than the extra 4MP (which doesn’t really matter unless you’re uber-cropping or making BIG enlargements) and .5fps is that the D60 is slightly less light sensitive (bad) than the D40.

I came to the conclusion that it was better to get a D40, and it was cheaper as a bonus.
