Because you have a Nikon, you are in luck, as all of the Nikon lenses are compatible with all of the Nikon SLR cameras, whether they be film or digital. That is the advantage of the Nikon system and no need to double up.

Well… your question is pretty complicated because there are a lot of different nikon lenses and they don't all work well with different cameras… for example a VR lenses that works perfect on your D40 would only work on a F5, F6, N75, N65, N80 or F100 film camera…. like wise an AF or AF-D lens would work on any autofocusing film camera but not on your D40.

If you have some specific lenses already then I might be able to tell you which will work with what…. also note that some lens manufacturers make special digitalSLR lenses that are only compatible with a nikon digital with that has the APC size sensor like your D40, if you put it on any film nikon or even the digital D3 it would have major darkening around the edges…

Your best be might be a F100… you can find them cheap on ebay for 100-200 dollars.
