If you have some specific lenses already then I might be able to tell you which will work with what.... also note that some lens manufacturers make special digitalSLR lenses that are only compatible with a nikon digital with that has the APC size sensor like your D40, if you put it on any film nikon or even the digital D3 it would have major darkening around the edges...
